Individual Tax Payments - Frequently Asked Questions
The IRS has a "Where's My Refund?" online tool to check the status of your Federal (IRS) Tax Refund.
- Please visit: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/wmr/
- Enter your Social Security Number
- Select the tax year for which you are checking on the refund status
- Enter the Filing Status shown on your tax return
- Enter the exact whole dollar amount shown on your tax return. Even if you know there are changes made to the real refund amount, enter the number on the tax return that was filed.
- Click Submit.
The following screen will tell you whether the return has been processed or is delayed for some reason (it won't tell you the reason), and the expected date the refund will be (or has already been) sent.
The FTB also has a Where's My Refund?" online tool to check the status of your California (FTB) Tax Refund.

- Enter your Social Security Number
- Enter your the numbers in your Mailing Address (ex. for 123 Main St., you would only enter "123")
- Enter your Zip Code
- Enter the exact whole dollar amount shown on your tax return. Even if you know there are changes made to the real refund amount, enter the number on the tax return that was filed.
- Click "Check Your Refund" button
The following screen will tell you whether the return has been processed or is delayed for some reason (it won't tell you the reason), and the expected date the refund will be (or has already been) sent.
The IRS has an online payment lookup tool to check the status of payments that were submitted through the IRS website. Please note: this tool is not available if payment was submited electronically through the filing of the tax return.
- Please visit: https://directpay.irs.gov/directpay/paymentManager?execution=e1s1
- Enter the confirmation number you received when you submitted payment online. (You should have received an email with the confirmation number if you did not record it when you submitted the payment)
- Enter your Social Security Number
- Click "Look Up Payment" Button
The next page will show you the details of your payment. After confirmtion the correct payment type and tax year, make sure to look at the "Payment Status" section to see if the payment was Accepted or Returned.

- Click on “Pay individual tax” under Personal tax payments heading
- Click on “Make a Payment” button
